Nesantaikos laikai : Vilties redaktoriaus Antano Smetonos pasitraukimas

LTAntano Smetonos priverstinis ar principinis, kaip rašo tautinės linkmės šalininkai, pasitraukimas iš Vilties redaktorių 1913 m. tiek istorinėje literatūroje, tiek ir atsiminimuose vertinamas nevienareikšmiškai. Smetona laiške Tumui rašė viltininkų susirinkime ketinęs siūlyti pakeitimus redakcijos veikloje, nes didėja skaitytojų reikalavimai, antraip Viltis skurs ir mažės dalininkų. Norėjo pasitraukti iš banko, prašydamas panašaus materialinio aprūpinimo, kokį ten turėjo, ir atsidėti vien redagavimui, jei gautų padėjėju kunigą Juozapą Dobužinskį. Kitu atveju į redaktorius tiktų Vladas Jurgutis, o Smetona liktų redakcijoje kaip buvęs, tik nepasirašinėtų redaktoriumi, nes "labai atsibodę". Kauno autoritetai į jo padėjėjus numatė Justiną Staugaitį, bet jis netinka dėl per didelio paklusnumo dvasinei vyresnybei, be to, nepasižymi taktu, svarstydamas opius lietuvių gyvenimo reikalus. Smetona sutiktų su Dobužinskio kandidatūra arba kunigo tarp bendradarbių visai nereikėtų. Šaltinio ir Vienybės aplinkoje atsirado tokių, kuriems Viltis atrodo nekatalikiška. Jie trokšta, anot Smetonos, laikraštį pakreipti susiaurėjusios katalikybės keliu. Su priskirtuoju redaktoriumi nei Smetona, nei Kubilius negalėtų darbuotis, nes laikraštis atsisakytų "vidurio" linkmės. Todėl abu pasitrauktų. Tada atsigautų susilpnėję kairieji, neliktų tilto tarp kunigų ir pasauliečių inteligentų, o lietuvių visuomenė suskiltų į dvi priešingas stovyklas, įsigalėtų klerikalizmas, kurio lig šiol tarp lietuvių nebūta.Reikšminiai žodžiai: Antanas Smetona; "Viltis"; Tautinis sąjūdis; Viltis; Viltininkai.

ENAntanas Smetona’s forced or principled, as advocates of the national origin write, withdrawal from the position of editor of “Viltis” [Hope] in 1913 is controversially evaluated in historical literature as well as in recollections. In his letter to Tumas, Smetona wrote of his intentions to offer certain amendments to activities of the editorial office of “Viltis”, since readers’ demands were growing. He claimed that without such amendments “Viltis” would wilt and the number of shareholders would decrease. He wanted to withdraw from the bank by applying for the same material maintenance he had had in the bank and devote his time entirely to editing if Juozapas Dobužinskis assisted him. Vladas Jurgutis would perfectly suit as the editor, whereas Smetona would stay in the editorial office as a former editor without signing as the editor since he found it very boring. The authorities of Kaunas intended to assign Justinas Staugaitis as his assistant; however, he did not suit Smetona since he was too obedient to spiritual authorities. Moreover, he was not tactic when considering important aspects of the life of Lithuanian people. Smetona would agree with the candidacy of Dobužinskis. Smetona believed that there were forces which considered “Viltis” a non-catholic issue. They wanted to direct the newspaper to the narrow path of Catholicism. Neither Smetona nor Kubilius would be able to work with the assigned editor, since the newspaper would refuse the “middle” direction. Therefore, they both would withdraw. In this case, the left wing would revive, and no bridge between priests and secular intelligentsia would remain, whereas, Lithuanian society would be divided into two camps. Clericalism would be established, and that would be a phenomena Lithuania had never seen before.
