Summary / Abstract:

ENAbout 30% of books published in Lithuania are translations. The proportion of translated non-fiction literature was growing steadily in the last decade - from 3.9% in 1990 to 11% in 1999 year. Also growing is the proportion of translated non-fiction literature compared to translated fiction (29.7% in 1995, 46.5% in 1999). Circulation changes are also specific for non-fiction translations. In 1990 average circulation of any book was 12.1 thousands, but similar figure only for non-fiction translations was 26.2 thousands. But later non-fiction translated books circulation dropped 58.8%, while the total market figure was 33.6%. There are two major topics that are most popular in translated non-fiction literature - dominating "health, body and spirit" books and at the second place - religious literature. Most of the translations are from English, much less from German and French. Other languages are very rare. Open Society Fund-Lithuania (OSF-L) is one of the main actors in the field of publishing nonfiction translations. OSF-L has realized the Programme Books for an Open Society (Atviros Lietuvos knyga, ALK) that is unique in Lithuania. The Programme has not only fundamentally enriched intellectual and academic discourses in the field of social sciences and humanities but also contributed to the processes of democratization. Other attempts to support non-commercial translations of non-fiction literature could be considered as sporadic. The programme Books for an Open Society initiates the publication of translated books in the humanities and social sciences. The publishing houses that receive the support from the Programme are obliged to give to OSF-Lithuania 300 copies of the books that are donated to public, university, and high school libraries in Lithuania. To accomplish evaluation research of the academic community on the issue of the Programme Books for an Open Society as it was planned in the initial stage was impossible The main reasons are as follows: 1) the lack of statistical data about the academic community in general and information about the part of it that includes disciplines of social sciences and humanities even for the simple random sample; 2) the lack of financial recourses for initial sampling of the new society realm and research itself. It was decided that the lack of quantitative data could be compensated via the measurement of print-run of the published books that was accomplished by the team of Book Science Department.
