ENThe present article attempts to identify how motherhood reveals itself in the Lithuanian literature. The type of the mother-victim is most widely spread in the Lithuanian prose: mother, who adores her children and husband, is the source of kindness and tenderness. Must a woman have the feeling of motherhood by nature? Does motherhood still remain a value? Is the conception of motherhood as denial of tradition disappearing or strengthening? Depreciation of woman's personality was formatted by such premise that society until nowadays is thinking, using codes, created by patriarchal world. The lives of many women are only roles, "masks". The novel Kvėpavimas į marmurą (2006) by Laura Sintija Černiauskaitė is a reflection of modern world outlook. One of the most important aspects, linking these authors - Vanda Juknaitė, Laura Sintija Černiauskaitė, Dorota Terakowska, Jody Picoult - is the way of talking about woman, mother in the first place. We are invited to look at mothers not only from the point of view of feminism, but from a universal outlook, trying to identify motherhood with the nature itself and understand that as a variant of existence. Being in Černiauskaitė's novel means living along with one's own tiredness and despair. Because life itself is a value. [From the publication]
