ENKaunas School of Art was the first public office of education in the 20th century that offered special preparation for set designers in Lithuania. The strongest forces in the art of Lithuanian set design studied and later taught here, becoming integrated into the processes of the interpretation and entrenchment of this little known field of art. Therefore, when showing an interest in the inheritance of the contemporary school of Lithuanians set designers and its affect on the theatre, it is important to sort out how this process progressed and how it was related to the personal qualities of the artist and the particularity of his work. During the initial stage of Kaunas School of Art, an entrenchment of the qualities of stage design as an independent and specific field of art was sought. The idea of stage design as an additional creative activity could be found - without any implementation of stage design's studies. The qualities of decorative stage design determined the establishment of the initial stage of the study of stage design in the Kaunas School of Art, which was related to the program of monumental painting. After M. Dobužinskis, there was an attempt to explain and realize the theatrical qualities of stage design during the further stage of teaching. An Applied feature of stage design was exposed during this new stage of the stage designer's education. The qualities of functionality in art and its application were highlighted in 1929. The possibility to assimilate the qualities of modem stage design appeared in the studio of stage design of Ušinskas, where attention was focused on new technologies. Thus Kaunas School of Art became, after it had began it's educational program of stage design, not only a scholastic institution, but also a place for the creative initiatives of the artist. The Theatre of Marionettes, that was founded here, became the first self-authored theatre in Lithuania. Therefore, it is possible to relate the initial contribution of Kaunas School of Art to the entrenchment of the science of set design in Lithuania in two ways: from the perspective of its officiai and personal attitudes. Its officiai aims related to the common formation of the school's profile, which was influenced by the model of European schools. The importance of an adaptability that corresponds to the nature of set design benefited the active integration of set design into theatrical creative work and offered new perspectives, legitimizing the visual nature of theatre for the future. Its personal aims related to the individuals practice in theatre, their education and personal views which, in turn, influenced the entrenchment of the authority and prestige of the artist. This contributed to the application of an individual concretization within the space of a play, and initiated the search for the artist's identity. [From the publication]
