ENThe article expresses the idea that having a united system of personal artistic and professional training as a basis is an essential component in music teacher training. Having purposeful and professionally directed studies of music-related subjects can help to develop such a system. It is also supposed to help skilfully unite the impact of studies on personal qualification with the impact on competence that is important while organising schoolchildren's artistic training in democratic society schools. Survey results indicate that music educators have limited competence when the music perfomer training oriented approach dominates in musical studies. The said phenomena are typical of specialists having graduated from both the Lithuanian Academy of Music where music performers are educated and the universities that train teachers of music. On the basis of an experiment, the article provides suggestions for improving future music teacher's competence in amateur student artistic groups. The article includes discussion on the ways of developing spiritual values, the impact of studies on personal culture and on the system of personality traits important for an educator. The experimental results disclose possibilities of a general impact on personal culture and professional competence on the basis of purposeful and directed musical activities and the variety of study forms. A supplementary investigation that has been carried out by directing pedagogical impact towards comprehensive development of children's culture proves the importance music teacher's competence and its development based on a united system of artistic training and professional development.
