Lietuvoje muziejaus samprata nesulaukia deramo kultūrininkų, muziejininkų, kultūros politikų dėmesio. Lietuvoje muziejaus apibrėžimas visų pirma orientuotas į teisinį reguliavimą, kai tuo tarpu ICOM apibrėžime į pirmą vietą iškeliama muziejaus prigimtis ir esmė, jo misija visuomenėje. Lietuvoje muziejaus tikslai dažnai suvokiami siaurai, sureikšminant ir išskiriant tik vieną ar kelias galimas muziejaus veiklos sritis. Panašiai ir norimo steigti Vilniaus miesto muziejaus paskirtis siaurinama tik iki atraktyvios edukacinės veiklos centro. ENThe issues of the contemporary definition of a national museum and a museum in general as well as its notion as an institution among the official state bodies and various public circles have not yet received a proper scientific attention from Lithuanian museologists, culture scholars and sociologists. This presentation is aimed at bringing the topics of the definition and notion of a museum into the arena of a public scientific debate. The content of the definition of a museum is discussed drawing on the analysis pattern suggested by the Dutch museologist Peter van Mensch. On the basis of the pattern the author compares two definitions of the museum - the standard definition used by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), which is prevailing within the international museological community, and the official one included in the law on museums of the Republic of Lithuania. A study and the comparison of the Lithuanian legal definition of the museum with that of the ICOM allow summarizing that the Lithuanian definition is one-sided, in that it concentrates on the legal basis of the museum, i.e. emphasizes proper legal procedures of the museum activity valid in the country. The Lithuanian perspective leaves out the notions of the nature and purpose of the museum, which make it different among other institutions of memory. The second part of the presentation offers a study of the opportunities for the establishment of a new city museum in Vilnius. It discusses the legal status, collections and display space of the museum. It is highlighted that the founders of such a museum shall primarily have a clear definition of the museum's vision and its role in society. [From the publication]
