Coping with Sounds: an Approach to Teaching Phonetics at the IFL

LTStraipsnyje aptariami pagrindiniai fonetikos kurso dėstymo bakalauro studijų studentams principai. Išskiriamos dvi pagrindinės problemos: 1) sunkumai, iškylantys dėstant įvadinį svetimosios kalbos fonetikos kursą, bei 2) sunkumai, susiję su nepilnos dienos studijoms skirtų auditorinių valandų mažesniu skaičiumi nei paprastai skiriama pilnos dienos studijoms. Dėl minėtų priežasčių ypatingas dėmesys fonetikos kurse turi būti skiriamas studentų savarankiškam darbui. Siekiant atsižvelgti į abu faktorius, straipsnyje nurodomi prioritetai, aptariami būdai, galintys palengvinti mokymąsi bei užtikrinti jo efektyvumą, autoriaus nuomone, ypatingo dėmesio reikalauja su tarimo fiziologija, silpnųjų formų aiškinimu ir intonacijos lavinimu susiję klausimai. Be to, straipsnyje teigiama, jog tarimo ypatumai gali būti perteikiami ir įsisavinami remiantis studentų gimtąja kalba bei daugiau dėmesio skiriant suprasegmentinių elementų įsisavinimui, tarimo praktikos metu būtina ištaisyti klaidas, kurios trukdo bendrauti kalbančiajam negimtąja/svetimąja kalba. ENThe present article provides an account of the main principles of teaching an Introductory Phonetics Course to part-time Bachelor students at the Institute of Foreign Languages. Apart from a number of difficulties natural to all students while dealing with the sometimes elusive aspects of English pronunciation, the course in question also has to cope with the shorter, than usual, period of class instruction. The approach suggested takes into consideration both factors. Course priorities listed in the article help establish the hierarchy in the newly-emerging system of regularities and relate it to the language of everyday use. Introducing the concept of the phoneme and the idea of the phonological contrast from the outset, the course aims to link practice and theory from the early stages of instruction. It is also argued that, through parallels with the languages spoken in the region, the present approach encourages introspection and increases the general students' awareness of language phenomena.
