ENThis article reveals the primary trends of the development of the publishing of Lithuanian books during the 1904-1914 period, accentuating the importance of the first professional institutions of Lithuanian press, library science and printing, bringing back and employing the help of a Lithuanian intelligentsia open to the world in ethnographic Lithuania after the printing ban, creating an independent infrastructure of press publishing and distribution institutions, based on analytical methods for book research of publications and sources from the first decade after the revival of the Lithuanian press and printing. Attention is focused on the more telling changes in the quality of the themes of Lithuanian books, which reflect the unique creative potential of the time period under discussion and reveals the opportunities of the nation to overcome the 40 year ban to publicly use their native language, and also the ability during a very short period of time to draw nearer to the level of book publishing of neighbouring countries.
