LTŽlugus Sovietų Sąjungai, didžiausio dėmesio baltarusių istoriografijoje susilaukė LDK istorija. Iki 1995 m. mokslinių ir ypač populiariųjų publikacijų kiekis padvigubėdavo beveik kasmet. Apibūdindama LDK, suverenios Baltarusijos istoriografija neigė pagrindines sovietinės koncepcijos ideologemas ir paveldėjo XX a. trečiojo dešimtmečio baltarusių istoriografijos, sužlugdytos Stalino represijų laikotarpiu, pozicijas. LDK buvo vaizduojama taip pat ir baltarusių valstybe ("baltarusių- lietuvių"), kuri vystėsi provakarietiška kryptimi ir siekė atsiriboti nuo Rusijos. Nepaisant šio mito nevienareikšmiškumo, jis sąlygojo baltarusių tapatybės sustiprėjimą ir baltarusių valstybingumo raidą. Įsitvirtinus A. Lukašenkos režimui, istorijos dėstymo srityje, kurią imta ideologiškai kontroliuoti, įsakmiai stiprinamas pažįstamas nuo sovietų laikų LDK kaip priešiškos baltarusių tautai valstybės įvaizdis. Tačiau masinėje savimonėje istorinis mitas apie LDK yra svarbiausias elementas, atsveriantis oficialiąją ideologiją ir Baltarusijos bei Rusijos reintegracijos politiką. ENAfter the downfall of the Soviet Union, the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania attained significant attention in the historiography of Byelorussia. Before 1995 the number of scientific and especially popular publications doubled almost every year. When characterizing the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the historiography of the sovereign Byelorussia denied the main ideologemes of the Soviet concept and inherited the positions of the Byelorussian historiography of the twenties of the 20th century, which was neutralized during the time period of Stalin’s repressions. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania was also presented as a Byelorussian state ("Byelorussian – Lithuanian commonwealth”"), which developed in the pro-Western directions and attempted to disassociate itself from Russia. Notwithstanding the ambiguity of the myth, it resulted in the strengthening of the Byelorussian identity and development of the Byelorussian statehood. After the entrenchment of A. Lukashenko’s regime, the image of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as a state, antagonistic to the Byelorussian nation, which was present in the Soviet times was commenced to be entrenched in the area of teaching history, which was started to be controlled ideologically. However in the public self-perception the historical myth of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania is the most important element, counterbalancing the official ideology and the policies of reintegration of Byelorussia and Russia.
