LTStraipsnyje apžvelgiama Lietuvos saugumo darbotvarkė dabartinėje saugumo aplinkoje: Lietuvos Respublikos (LR) narystė NATO bei ES, procesai, vykstantys šiose tarptautinėse organizacijose bei ES ir NATO rytinėje kaimynystėje, ypač tiesiogiai su LR besiribojančiose NVS valstybėse; atsakas į tarptautinio terorizmo iššūkį ir didėjanti masinio naikinimo ginklų platinimo grėsmė; LR nacionalinio saugumo tikslas, Lietuvos kariuomenės vieta šiuolaikinėje visuomenėje, nagrinėjama krašto apsaugos sistema. Nusakomi taikos meto Lietuvos kariuomenės uždaviniai: savarankiškai ir bendradarbiaudama su NATO institucijomis bei kitų NATO valstybių ginkluotosiomis pajėgomis, kariuomenė saugo valstybės teritoriją ir karines teritorijas, [...] stebi ir kontroliuoja išskirtinę ekonominę zoną bei kontinentinį šelfą; palaiko kovinę parengtį; LR Konstitucijos bei įstatymų nustatyta tvarka Respublikos Prezidentui bei Seimui nusprendus dalyvauja tarptautinėse kovinėse operacijose; įstatymų numatytais atvejais ir tvarka gali būti pasiųsta padėti civilinei valdžiai. ENThe article overviews Lithuania’s security agenda in the present environment: membership of the Republic of Lithuania in NATO and the EU, the processes, going on in the said international organizations and in their Eastern neighbourship, especially in the CIS countries, directly bordering the Republic of Lithuania; response to international terrorism challenges and the increasing threat of spread of weapons of mass destruction; the aims of national security of the Republic of Lithuania, the place of Lithuanian army in the modern society and the national defense system, defines the tasks for Lithuanian army in the time of piece: safeguarding the territory of the state and military territories self-sufficiently and in cooperation with the NATO institutions and armed forces of other NATO states, [...] observing and controlling the exceptional economic zone and the continental shelf; keeping the state of preparedness; participating in international military operations by order of the President of the Republic and the Parliament according to the procedure, prescribed by the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania and the laws; assistance to civil authorities in cases and according to the procedure, foreseen by the laws. In addition the article examines the changing global security environment and the new role of armed forces, discusses the risk factors, threats to the national security of the Republic of Lithuania, [...] studies the most important directions of the defense politics of the Republic of Lithuania, overviews the areas and directions of strengthening of the Euro-Atlantic security, discusses the new tasks and requirements for Lithuania’s army, the rearrangement of the structure of the army (defense reform principles, defense resources, defense and the society) and the democratic control of the army and other national security institutions.
