ENLiving outside Lithuania at the beginning of the 20th century, young starting writer Antanas Vienuolis wrote his masterpiece - a short story "Paskenduolė" (1909), in which his longing for the native suffering country and recall of distressful stories of poor girls in his village shaped an outstanding image of the main character - Veronika, lively and symbolic quintessence of almost all forthcoming women characters in his prose. The article establishes three main types of womanhood in Vienuolis prose: woman as a victim (mainly in short stories); woman as a hero, knowingly devoting herself as a patriot of her country (mainly in legends, historical novels, and plays), and, finally, woman as a constantly suffering creature (mainly in novels of today).
