ENOne of the most prominent researchers of Lithuania's, especially Vilnius', culture and arts history Vladas Drėma (1910-1995) collected the sources of old Lithuanian theater (extracts from historical documents, theater posters, and reviews in periodicals). His collection unfold thoroughly the panorama of Lithuania's theatrical and cultural life from the 18th until the middle of the 19th centuries. This material was gathered some four decades ago; part of it was already quoted and corrected by Lithuanian and Polish scholars, such as Dr. Vida Bakutytė, Dr. Jerzy Tymoszewicz, and others, but it is still valuable springhead for acquiring knowledge on the old Lithuanian culture from various perspectives. The chronological boundaries of theater history in this collection are the years from 1752 until 1853; the sources are presented in Latin, Polish and Russian. These sources for the first time are presented along with translations into Lithuanian. Drėma's collection of sources is full of factual information on the repertoire and individual plays performed in theaters operating in Vilnius and also by foreign companies touring the Lithuanian capital. This data reflects the rich, although contradictory, theatrical life of Vilnius in relief. An important group of sources is comprised of reviews and responses to plays from the press, as well as of information pertaining to paratheatrical events (fireworks, tableaux vivant, and others) that were a significant part of the theatrical and cultural life in Vilnius at that time. Drėma's compiled sources of old Lithuanian theater are kept in the researcher's family archives. The sources were translated and prepared by scholars researching Lithuania's theatrical life and theater history in the 18th and 19th centuries: dr. habil. prof. Eugenija Ulčinaitė, Gražina Mareckaitė, dr. Jolanta Širkaitė, dr. Helmutas Šabasevičius. [From the publication]
