ENThe monograph is devoted to the creative work of one of the initiators of Lithuanian neoromanticism, the laureate of the Lithuanian National Arts and Culture Prize — Vidmantas Bartulis. It aims at characterising the style of the artist who is not only widely performed in Lithuania, but is also well-known in the world, as well as presenting arguments defining the evolution of his style. Attention is paid to the composer’s new strategies in the sphere of musical communication, which manifest themselves equally in chamber and theatre music, performances and electronic scores. Presented in this monograph are detailed analyses of some of Bartulis’ major works, including his Requiem, the opera Pamoka (The Lesson), the oratorio Nelaimėlis Jobas (The Unfortunate Job), the oratorio Kelias (The Path), as well as vocal and theatre music and works for organ. In addition to traditional themes of analysis, attention is drawn to the composer’s favourite timbres, instrumental combinations, his inner motivation and logical approach to the entirety of musical composition, which is quite unusual in the context of postmodern art. The diversity of genres in his music reveals different facets of his creative personality. The phenomenon of “music within music”, which is of great interest to the artist, when the relationship with musical heritage, including folk music, is expressed in various ways (as in the series of works with titles beginning with / like... that was continued by the composer for more than a decade), is analysed separately. Also, peculiarities of the musical language of Bartulis’ sacral opuses, as well as their relevance, are studied. The monograph also tackles the aesthetic views of the composer and his ties with other composers of the same generation: Mindaugas Urbaitis, Onutė Narbutaitė, Algirdas Martinaitis, Faustas Latėnas. Also, the opposition of “the new simplicity” to the values and images favoured by the avant-garde is discussed. Bartulis’ creative range extends from introvert contemplative music to instrumental theatre, from miniatures to large symphonic canvases and multimedia projects. Bartulis’ significant contribution to the musical life of the city of Kaunas is reviewed (Chairman of the Kaunas division of the Lithuanian Composers’ Union, Art Director of the new music festival Iš Arti, former Director of the Drama theatre, etc). The work is supplemented with interviews with the composer, performers and reviewers of his music, as well as abstracts of his works, main dates of the composer’s life, complete list of works, bibliography and annotations.
