Vytautas Didysis. Valdovo įvaizdis

LTStudija iškelia ir pagrindžia hipotezę, kad Vytautas buvo pagrindinis savo, kaip didžiojo valdovo, įvaizdžio kūrėjas, o jo amžininkai bei vėlesnės kartos šį įvaizdį papildė ir pritaikė savo reikmėms ir valdžios sampratoms. Didžiojo kunigaikščio įvaizdžio kūrimo, perkūrimo, funkcionavimo ir raiškos analizė apima XIV amžiaus antrosios pusės – XVIII amžiaus pradžios šaltinius, nevengiant ekskursų į XX amžiaus ir šių dienų medžiagą. Parodoma, jog egzistavo du Vytauto - gerojo valdovo ir tirono - įvaizdžiai. Paradoksalu, kad šie priešingi vertinimai buvo grindžiami tais pačiais didžiojo kunigaikščio būdo bruožais ar jo gyvenimo faktais. Valdovo vertinimas priklausė nuo vertintojų, o pastarieji, visų pirma, skyrėsi kilme: tai, kas Lietuvoje buvo pripažįstama geidžiama tvirta valdžia, Vakarų Europoje buvo laikoma tironija. Tyrimas remiasi gausiais rašytiniais ir vizualiniais šaltiniais bei žodinės tradicijos ištekliais. Turtinga ir įvairi pirminė medžiaga analizuojama iš politinės ir socialinės istorijos, atminties kultūros, ikonografijos ir retorikos perspektyvų. Vytauto įvaizdis nagrinėjamas viduramžių ir naujųjų laikų valdžios vaizdiniuos kontekste, taip išryškinant ir bendrumus, ir Vytauto įvaizdžio spragas. Parodoma, ką Lietuvos politinė mintis perėmė iš Europos rytų ir vakarų kultūrų, ir kurie modeliai čia neprigijo. Didžiojo kunigaikščio įvaizdžio ilgaamžiškumas aiškinamas jo gebėjimui prisitaikyti prie kintančių poreikių ir siekiamybę paversti tikrove įsivaizduojamoje praeityje. ENThe study raises and substantiates the hypothesis that Vytautas Magnus was the main shaper of his own image as the grand ruler and his contemporaries and the later generations supplemented the said image and applied it to their needs and the concepts of power. The analysis of the development, re-development, functioning and expression of the image of the Grand Duke covers the sources of the second half of the 14th century – the beginning of the 18th century, with certain excursions to the materials of the 20th century and the present day. The study shows that there existed two images of Vytautas, i. e. that of a good ruler and that of a tyrant. Strange as it may seem, such contradictory evaluations were based by the same traits of the character or facts of life of the Grand Duke. The evaluation of the ruler depended on the evaluators, who, first of all, were different according to their origins: the aspects, which were considered only a strong authority in Lithuania, were held tyranny in the Western Europe. The study is based by the plentiful written and visual sources and the resources of the verbal tradition. The rich and diverse primary materials are analyzed from the perspectives of political and social history, the memory culture, iconography and rhetoric. Vytautas’s image is examined in the context of the imagery of power of the Middle Ages and the New Times, thus highlighting the commonalities and gaps of the image of Vytautas. The study shows the aspects, taken over by the political ideology of Lithuania from the cultures of Eastern and Western Europe and the models, which did not find their way into Lithuania. The longevity of the image of the Grand Duke is explained by his ability to adapt to the changing needs and the strivings to turn his image into reality in the imagined past.
