Upton Sinclair: the Lithuanian jungle: upon the centenary The Jungle (1905 and 1906) by Upton Sinclair

LTKnygoje aptariamas Uptono Sinclair‘o romanas „Džiunglės“, kuriame vaizduojamas lietuvių emigrantų gyvenimas Čikagoje. Autorius susitelkia ties romano „lietuviškumo“ tyrimu – analizės išeities taškas yra paties Sinclair‘o teiginys, jog visos, net ir smulkiausios romano detalės yra autentiškos. Pirmojoje knygos dalyje siekiama atskleisti priežastis, dėl kurių Sinclair‘as savo romane iš visų etninių grupių pasirinko vaizduoti būtent lietuvius, identifikuoti lietuviškojo substrato šaltinius (jie, pasak knygos autoriaus, yra du – lietuviškos Sinclair‘o matytos vestuvės ir Ernesto Poole straipsnis, pasirašytas lietuviška Antano Kaztauskio (Kazlausko) pavarde) ir romano medžiagos (lietuviškų žodžių ir kitų Čikagos lietuvių gyvenimo detalių) rinkimo strategiją, aptarti, kaip ši medžiaga atspindima romane. Antrojoje knygos dalyje aptariami tekste vartojami lietuviški žodžiai, jų tarminės ir ortografinės ypatybės, apžvelgiami pasitaikantys netikslumų ir redagavimo dalykai. Autorius, tirdamas lietuviškas romano pavardes, detektyviškai atskleidžia šių lietuviškų veikėjų prototipus (donorus). Paskutiniame romano topografijai skirtame knygos skyriuje identifikuojami realūs romane vaizduojamų vietų – Kerio sąvartyno, ponios Anelės pensiono, kuriame buvo švenčiamos lietuvių vestuvės ir bažnyčios, kurioje vyko tuoktuvės – atitikmenys. Daroma išvada, kad pirmasis romano skyrius, kuriame vaizduojamos lietuvių vestuvės, yra pats „lietuviškiausias“ dėl jame aprašomų lietuviškų papročių ir lietuviškų žodžių – čia 68 kartus iš 194 pavartojami 46 iš visų 69 romane sutinkamų lietuviškų žodžių.Reikšminiai žodžiai: Amerikiečių literatūra; Lietuviai amerikiečių literatūroje; Lietuviai Amerikoje; Emigrantų kalba; American literature; Lithuanians in american literature; Lithuanians in America; Research in diaspora linguistics.

ENThe novel by Upton Sinclair “The Jungle” depicting the life of Lithuanian emigrants in Chicago is discussed in the book. The author focuses on the study of Lithuanian features in the novel. The starting point for the analysis is Sinclair’s statement that all, even the smallest details, in the novel are authentic. The first part of the book is aimed at revealing the reasons why Sinclair chose to portray namely Lithuanians from all the ethnical groups in his novel, identify the sources of the Lithuanian substratum (there are two of them, according to the author, – Lithuanian wedding seen by Sinclair and Ernest Poole’s article signed under a Lithuanian surname of Antanas Kaztauskis (Kazlauskas) and the strategy for collecting material for the novel (Lithuanian words and other details from the life of Lithuanians in Chicago), discuss how this material is reflected in the novel. The second part of the book deals with Lithuanian words used in the text, their dialectal and orthographic features, detected inaccuracies and proofreading issues are overviewed. When studying the Lithuanian surnames of the novel, the author, like a detective, reveals the prototypes (donors) of these Lithuanian characters. The real equivalents of places depicted in the novel, i.e. Kerry’s dumping ground, poni Aniele’s boarding house where Lithuanian weddings were celebrated and churches where marriages took place, are identified in the last chapter of the book dedicated to the topography of the novel. A conclusion is drawn that the first chapter of the novel where Lithuanian wedding is depicted is the most ”Lithuanian” because of Lithuanian customs described there and Lithuanian words as 46 out of 69 Lithuanian words used in the novel are used here for 68 out of 194 times.
