ENFor society to become concerned about a certain issue and consider it as a social problem, information most effectively delivered by the mass media is needed, and for individuals to become concerned about the environment, sufficient attention of the mass media to the issue is necessary. One of the most common ways to investigate the relationship between the mass media and public opinion is based on the "agenda setting" hypothesis, claiming that the mass media is playing a crucial role in influencing the public agenda. The main aim of the article is to present the agenda setting perspective and apply it for the case of Lithuania in studying the relationship between the mass media and public opinion on the environmental issues. The main questions of the research are as follows: What is the amount of environmental concern in the changing political, economic and social situation? What is the role of the mass media in public's perceptions of environmental issues today? Although the results of the research are limited because of the lack of the knowledge of the media agenda, the public opinion survey conducted in the Kaunas city in August, 1998 revealed several interesting results concerning the role of the mass media in the public's environmental concern. It appears that the mass media are at the top of the trustworthiest institutions. Moreover, they are the most popular source of the environmental information. Thus, the media agenda is really important for the public agenda and the future research of the media agenda will probably provide more sophisticated data on the relationship between two agendas, the media and public one.
