Trends in modernizing the Lithuanian prose fiction in the Soviet period: jazz as a metaphor for spiritual freedom in Romualdas Lankauskas' short story "Jazz Carriage"
Summary / Abstract:

ENRomualdas Lankauskas is one of the most outstanding Lithuanian prose writers of the second half of the 20th century, in his modern short story Jazz Carriage suggestively raising important questions of the society of that time, subtly highlighting the clashes of several generations and worldviews. Jazz music is used in the writerís prose text as a visual instrument, a meaningful metaphor, which allows to unfold the complex conflicts and contradictions of the society of the period and dominating images of consciousness. The text shows the spiritual growth of the maturing, increasingly conscious part of the young society, the constancy of the professed values and the confrontation with the Soviet system, the ideology of which determines life in the reality of simulacra. The writer vividly recreates the emotional atmosphere of the Soviet period, full of spiritual restraints and deformations and conveys the spiritual orbit of the youth (Jurgis, Markizas, Algis, Teodoras), where playing jazz, a western art form with its characteristic variety of variations, dynamism, and mood swings, allows us to experience the true colours of being and the lively pulse of the life and its intensity. In the short story Jazz Carriage, jazz and its musical architectonics metaphorize the frequency of changing human existential positions, constantly appearing and unforeseen roles and functions in life, and most importantly, it helps to reveal real things: the values of depth and sensitivity in the surrounding world marked by spiritual confusion. The argumentative tonality of the prose work, the pulsation of the heroesí consciousness, the rushing flow of feelings and thoughts against the background of jazz music become an opportunity to illuminate more clearly the dramatic social and existential life situations of the period. Musical motifs become a significant inspiration for R. Lankauskasí modern prose. Key words: Lithuanian prose of the Soviet period, Romualdas Lankauskas, short story, jazz. [From the publication]
