Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article focuses on approximately 300 sentences mentioning postwar Lithuanian partisans, selected from the “Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language” and its card indexes. Following the methodology of conceptual analysis elaborated by the Lublin ethnolinguistics school, this study investigates the ways the Lithuanian partisan is conceptualized and categorized in the dictionary, as well as the cognitive definition of this concept. The semantic analysis of the data made it clear that the formation of the concept PARTISAN is determined by its historical, political and ideological context. Dictionary volumes and index cards written during the Soviet regime show a clearly negative evaluation of the partisan activity. After the restoration of independence and the renewal of historical memory, partisans are depicted as freedom fighters and protectors of Lithuania. After the semantic analysis of the illustrative material, the following cognitive definition of the partisan can be proposed: Lithuanian partisans are participants of the guerilla warfare against the rule of the Soviet Union. The location of their battle is an abstract forest. The partisans hide from their enemies in shelters. The historical period of their warfare is often defined by the prepositional phrase after the war, rarely by a subordinate clause. Partisans are usually young men. People are afraid of partisans, but still let them inside their homes, feed them, clothe them and pass on important news to them. The Soviet government fights the partisans and their supporting activists. After the war, the number of partisans in the forest is substantial. However, many of them are caught and executed. The life of the partisans is tough; they are bearded, shaggy, hungry, pediculous, and always in hiding. Most of their deaths occurr in battles with NKVD units, due to destruction battalions (known by the Lithuanians as stribai) or by self destruction. Their corpses are often defiled. Partisan activities are not embellished in the dictionary examples. Some sentences describe them as seekers of justice or representatives of a nonofficial government. Nonetheless, people still have painful memories of partisan violence, murders and robberies. There have been many victims of this violence, though some testify that they were harmed by impostors claiming to be partisans. Keywords: cognitive ethnolinguistics, semantics, concept of postwar partisan, cognitive definition, “Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language”. [From the publication]
