ENCultural (including linguistic) integrity is one of the most important and widely-discussed topics of the first quarter of the 21st century. Exposed to various cultural (including linguistic), social, and economic factors, every individual inevitably experiences the need to choose, particularly in ethnically-diverse regions. This article focuses on the integrity of one such region — the district of Šalčininkai in southeastern Lithuania. The degree to which the official linguistic landscape of the area reflects the country’s geographical, historical, and cultural realities is discussed and analyzed through three conceptual lenses — local, regional, and national. The author of the article argues that strengthening links at the national level could create favorable conditions for the Lithuanian identity to be more widely adopted in the region. However, research shows that the area’s integrity is mostly realized through local and regional links. So-called local identity is considered to be more relevant. This is based on strong links with surrounding locations and familiar historical figures representing the Romanticera perception of the Lithuanian identity as being part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. However, it should be noted that such perception is completely disassociated from the current understanding of the Lithuanian identity, which centers around Lithuanian language and culture. Keywords: cultural memory, linguistic landscape, identity, cultural integrity, linguistic integrity, Šalčininkai district. [From the publication]
