Summary / Abstract:

ENThe object of the study is the linguistic expression of comments posted under articles about the coronavirus on the social network Facebook. The aim of the study is to identify and analyze the linguistic features of comments, to capture recurring trends, and to discuss and evaluate it in a wider cultural, social and political context. The research material consists of comments posted under pandemic articles on Facebook accounts of main Lithuanian news portals (alfa.lt, delfi.lt, lrytas.lt, 15min). Chronologically the study covers the period of the first and second pandemic waves (from March 2020 to January 2021). The research uses descriptive analytical, stylistic and rhetorical analysis methods. The stylistic discourse analysis allows to document the means of style and reveal the tendencies of its use and previously unregistered functions. The rhetorical approach assesses the persuasive power of these devices: determines which elements of linguistic expression function as instruments of influence. Analysis of comments reveals public reactions to pandemic threat, the quarantine, and measures used to manage the situation. The spectrum of negative emotions in the majority of comments range from outpouring of resentment and intense anger at the government’s decisions, to incitement to disobedience, which exacerbates the effects of the crisis. The comments are full of expressions belonging to the linguistic periphery: colloquial language elements, jargon, swear words, vulgarities, dysphemisms of everyday language as well as idioms, proverbs, proverbial quotations, allusions which imply the intertext.Comment columns constitute an influential discourse, its essential function is the persuasion, and the purpose of a comment is not only to express a reaction, a personal or a group opinion on an issue, but also to stand out in the stream of commenters, to attract the attention of others, to sparkle with wit, to “knock out” the opponent with a vivid expression. Keywords: pandemic discourse, language of online comments, stylistics, rhetoric, substandard lexis.
