EN[...] The term “canon” in the present paper describes the list of works relevant to any one country's literature and their hierarchy. Reflection on the changes in the canon reveals the paradoxical situation of textual ctiticism in Soviet and post-Soviet Lithuania. This situation is in discord with the traditional image of the symbiotic relationship between the canon and textual sholarship. This has nothing to do with post-modern doubt concerning the possibility of the canon and its meaning (cf. Hernstein Smith 1988, 45-53) - rather the opposite. The present paper has two objectives: on the one hand to show how the canon of the nations of Central Europe, specifically in Lithuania, was rearranged in the context of dramatic political alterations and the mass dissemination of books; on the other, to survey that aspect of contemporary editorial strategies that likely relates to the colonial imprint on post-Soviet culture.
