ENThe context of the study addresses the effective performance of health-care professionals in meeting their professional development needs. The object of this study refers to the needs and specifics of professional development for health-care professionals. The aim of the study is to analyse the theoretical assumptions of professional development, and to reveal the attitudes of health-care professionals towards the needs and specifics of professional development. Research methods. Following a theoretical analysis of the professional development concept, as well as the positive aspects and problems of planning and implementation in health care, a survey was conducted to analyse the attitudes of health-care professionals towards their needs and the specifics of their professional development. The aim of the research being to consider the needs and specifics of the development of qualifications of health-care professionals led to the choice of a survey. The survey included health-care professionals who participated in various qualification development events at the Centre for Continuous Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of Klaipėda University from September 2022 to February 2023. The health-care professionals involved in the study ranged from nursing, public health, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, rehabilitation, radiology, and complementary and alternative medicine. The sampling that was chosen for the study is a probability targeted convenience. The survey respondents were 124 participants from different regions of Lithuania who attended eight professional development events. Most of the respondents were from Klaipėda (71.3 %). Other respondents came from west Lithuania (13.6 %), and others were from other parts of Lithuania (15.1 %). The typical respondent in this study is a woman aged between 41 and 60, who has had a career in personal and public health for a period of 21 years or longer.Key results of the research. Health-care professionals are not involved in continuous and systematic professional development; however, their professional development is periodic and results-oriented. Younger health-care professionals with less experience are more likely to participate in professional development events. The benefits and importance of professional development for health-care institutions where the respondents work have been found to be relatively high. The provision of professional development opportunities, the design of a supportive learning climate and effective learning situations, the use of innovative technologies, involvement in the planning of the content of teaching and learning, and encouragement to evaluate the learning process, are key concerns for healthcare professionals. Innovative qualification development is a prerequisite for meeting the changing and increasing qualification requirements of health-care professionals. The most effective way into professional development is to disseminate professional experience and try out innovations. Health-care institutions have a vested interest in the effectiveness of staff development. The formulation of professional development objectives requires consistency between organisational objectives, and a balance between the objectives of the organisation and its departments, and those of individual employees. Insufficient cooperation between health and adult education institutions prevents the maximisation of the benefits of professional development for health-care workers. There is a lack of efficiency in the organisation of professional development events, the proficiency of lecturers, the adequacy of funding, and the personalisation of the content of professional development.Conclusions. Professional development is the process of the assessment of existing competences, the acquisition of new competences, the enhancement of existing competences, the application of professional experience, and the justification of the benefits, which requires organisational, financial and collaborative measures, as well as alignment with the needs of the institution. The survey has shown that health-care professionals are most likely to attend professional development events once or several times in six months. The results of the study have revealed that professional development for health-care staff is effective in making them professionals in their field. However, in order to improve the effectiveness of professional development for health-care professionals, it is necessary to adjust the scope of financial resources, to encourage greater responsibility for effectiveness among all actors, and to personalise the content of professional development programmes. The study has also indicated that professional development for health-care workers is result-oriented, yet of insufficient quality, with organisational, financial and other problems. It has been established that the planning and implementation of professional development for health-care professionals is subject to specific requirements in terms of objectives, responsibilities, financial resources, outcomes, content, nature and environment. The combination of these requirements means that the needs of health-care professionals in the field of professional development must beyond doubt be met. Keywords: health-care professionals, professional development. [From the publication]
