ENSocial anxiety is a problem in modern society because it affects many areas of a person’s life. It can negatively affect interpersonal relationships and learning outcomes. The academic environment is one of the places in which almost every young person has to participate. It can be a school, a university or another educational institution. Students with social anxiety can feel considerable difficulties, because collaboration, public speaking and other tasks are often an integral part of academic activities. This study analyses the relationship between students’ social anxiety and selfesteem and the perception of feedback, and the prognostic values of the variables. Methodology: 171 students participated in the study, 99 of them were women, and 72 were men. It was conducted in January 2022, using the electronic version of the questionnaires via the apklausa.lt website. People who are currently studying and aged between 18 and 35 were asked to fill in the questionnaire. The survey included three questionnaires: the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale, the Perception of Social Feedback Questionnaire, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The SPSS 24.0 program was used to analyse the data. In order to determine the relationship between social anxiety experienced and the perception of feedback, correlation analysis was applied using the Spearman Rho coefficient. Linear regression analysis was also used to determine the prognostic significance of feedback perception, self-evaluation and gender for experiencing social anxiety. Results: The study revealed that social anxiety is associated with a perception of negative feedback and low self-esteem. This corresponds with the insights of other authors whose studies have found a link between these phenomena (Schulze, Lobmaier, Arnold, Renneberg, 2013; Burrow, Rainone, 2017).It can be observed that individuals who rate themselves worse and interpret incoming feedback negatively may feel more anxious in a social environment. The results obtained support the assumption that social anxiety and the perception of feedback can be strongly influenced by the variable of self-esteem. Since having a negative self-perception, feedback can be evaluated according to it. For these reasons, social anxiety, together with the aforementioned interactions, limits a personality and his abilities. In the long term, it can make it difficult to develop professional skills and establish interpersonal relationships, and it can interfere with social functioning. Conclusions: 1) Greater student social anxiety is associated with negatively perceived feedback from the academic environment. This shows that students experiencing more pronounced social anxiety tend to evaluate feedback from the academic environment more negatively. 2) Greater social anxiety in students is associated with lower self-esteem. 3) Greater social anxiety among students is predicted by perceived negative feedback from the academic environment, lower self-esteem, and female gender. However, this study did not address how social anxiety, the perception of feedback, and self-evaluation might influence student academic achievement. Therefore, in continuing research on social anxiety in an academic environment, an indicator of academic achievement should be included. This indicator should reflect how socially anxious students’ perception of negative feedback and self-evaluation can affect their engagement in their academic activities. Keywords: social anxiety, social feedback, self-perception. [From the publication]
