ENOnly now are the latest details of 20th century Lithuanian history finally coming to light. We have endeavored to recover the distorted information, hidden events and individuals’ biographies that were formed during times of war, crisis and foreign occupation. This is by no means an easy task as many archives have been lost - some were destroyed, others were removed and hidden or otherwise placed in private hiding-places for protection and thus their whereabouts remain unknown. Unraveling these complex topics and finding the root of this information, spread far and wide, and then presenting it in a convincing and undisputable manner was a difficult yet intriguing task. Over the course of two and a half years the documentary series “Secret Archives of the 20th Century” was filmed not only in Lithuania, but also in Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Poland, Germany, Great Britain, Israel and the United States. Thousands of pages of documentation from Lithuanian and foreign archives were collected. It is this data which forms the basis for this “detective novel” where readers will be able to gain a better insight into these stories and form their own judgement. The many behind-the-scenes photographs taken during the filming of the “Secret Archives of the 20th Century” series complement the textual material. All the topics from the “Secret Archives of the 20th Century” were investigated with great attention to detail and as independently as possible. The aim was to reveal what went on behind the scenes, any new circumstances and as wide a context as possible, and in cases where there was sufficient data, to construct new versions or to form a new approach to the events.
