Title:
Šventosios miestelėnų etninė sudėtis XVII amžiuje
Summary / Abstract:

ENIn the Lithuanian historiography of the XVII-XVIII centuries, the inhabitants of Šventoji and Palanga tend to be linked to the Lithuanian element, while the Kurshes links are often overlooked. Historiography also ignores the community links of the XIX-XX century late Kurshes with those of XVI-XVII century Šventoji and Palanga. The names and surnames recorded in the census of Šventoji of the year 1679 become a valuable additional source when trying to determin the ethnic composition of this town. Most of the dwellers’ names are of German or Kurshes origin. The German name-surname element reveals the influence of the evangelical Lutheran Church and the links with Curonia or Prussia. There were somewhat fewer dwellers who were of Samogitian origin. That these regions were subject to the influence of Curonia during the private land ownership in the XVII-XVIII centuries and periods of territorial and administrative reforms in the end of the XVIII-XIX centuries helped to revive the Kurshes and evangelical Lutheran communities in Šventoji.
