Summary / Abstract:

ENThis paper describes how the bagpipe revival process in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, begun in the 1970s, has been influenced by historical and ethnographical sources, ethnomusicological scholarship, and certain personalities. Popular and academic views on the relationship between the instrument and ethnic identity—and contemporary developments in musical life—have undeniably had a considerable impact as well. Keywords: traditional musical instruments, folklore movement, reinterpretation, bagpipe, folk revival concept, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. [From the publication]
