ENThe opening article of the volume “The Dynamics of Lithuanian European Identity: From ‘Catching up with Europe’ to ‘Us-Europe’” written by Nerija Putinaitė analyses how, over the course of Lithuania’s twenty-year membership in the European Union, the most prominent narratives explaining the relationship between Lithuania and Europe have evolved, i.e. how Lithuanian European identity has changed. The dynamics of four narratives of Lithuanian European identity – ‘besieged fortress’, ‘catch up with Europe’, ‘Lithuania between East and West’, and ‘us-Europe’ – are examined following Lithuania’s accession to the EU in 2004. It is argued that EU membership has a significant impact on national narratives about European identity and encourages the strengthening of European identity elements within the national identity. To support this, speeches by Lithuanian presidents (or those who held the position) on the occasion of Europe Day and annual messages delivered between 2004 and 2023 have been analysed. The research reveals that the initially dominant narrative of catching up with Europe almost entirely disappeared in the fifteenth year of membership. Over time, an initially weak ‘us-Europe’ narrative began to prevail. It became a narrative that uniquely integrates various aspects of Lithuanian European identity, subtly intertwining narratives of ‘catching up with Europe’ and ‘Lithuania between East and West’, and potentially capable of integrating the ‘besieged fortress’ narrative.
