ENMatas Jonas Slanciauskas (1850-1924) was a tailor from the age of 16, who travelled and encountered many people, listened to their stories, and then retold those stories to others. Eventually, he became a zealous collector of the folklore of Northern Lithuania and a member of the Lithuanian Scienctific Society. More than 70 of his handwritten unique collections remain, containing over 3,000 texts about 800 songs, while the rest fairy tales, legends, and other stories, proverbs, adages, riddles, folk medicine knowledge, weather predictions, beliefs, spells and superstitions, games, as well as ethnographic descriptions, history, and language facts.
