Summary / Abstract:

ENIn all discussions about a possible influence of the ideas of the Theosophical Society on Čiurlionis, Polish symbolist painter and Theosophist Kazimierz Stabrowski, who was his mentor in Warsaw, is invariably mentioned. Several other important artists are referred to as Theosophical painters, although not all were card-carrying members of the Theosophical Society. The chapter discusses different relations between artists and Theosophy, and different artistic currents influenced by Theosophy. It then examines in which sense Stabrowski can be considered a Theosophical artist, and what Theosophical ideas he might have passed on to Čiurlionis. Keywords: Čiurlionis, Stabrowski, Theosophy, Theosophical Society, Theosophy and the Arts. [From the publication]
