ENIn 2015, the Union of the commemorators of the struggle for Lithuania's freedom surveyed Second World War and Lithuanian partisan war sites in Ignalina, Kelmė, Radviliškis, and Raseiniai districts. In the forest between Palmajė, Papliaušys, and Šiliniškiai villages, two Lithuanian partisan bunker sites were identified, but no surface finds were discovered at the Papliaušys bunker. The field survey of Sandrausiškė forest confirmed the information from written and oral accounts that from late 1945 to August 1946 the camp of the partisan platoon commanded by Povilas Morkūnas (1920–1953) stood at this site and included an underground wooden structure with heating and/or a food preparation area. The structure had later been burnt by Soviet soldiers. 14 finds characteristic of the first half mid 20th century were discovered at this location. In Bargailiai forest, two Lithuanian partisan bunker sites were discovered on the sacred hill known as Šventkalnis (a button with a Vytis symbol having been found in the vicinity of one) and a Second World War era ammunition find spot on the N shore of lake Praviršulis. In the vicinity of a Lithuanian partisan dug out in Mažuoliai forest, 19 finds dating to the partisan war period were discovered: cartridges, cartridge cases, bullets, etc. In Mūrai, a Lithuanian partisan bunker site with shrapnel was found. In Paberžiai forest, a Lithuanian partisan bunker site and a First World War ammunition find spot were surveyed with mid 20th century cartridges being found in the vicinity of the former. In Šaukotas forest, a Lithuanian partisan bunker site was identified and four finds dating to the partisan war era were discovered. In addition, a fieldwalking survey was conducted at the Lithuanian partisan bunker site in Giedraičiai (Bargailiai) and the Paberžiai farmstead site of the Brazauskas family, who were Lithuanian partisans. Meanwhile the dug out complex in Godlaukis forest must be considered a camp created by the retreating German armed forces in 1944 rather than a Lithuanian partisan site. The survey of the 13 August 1949 battle site in Užpelkiai forest continued and valuable archaeological data for recreating the course of the battle were collected. The metal detector survey covered about 1.4 ha and yielded 90 finds connected to the partisan camp site: a cleaning rod for an automatic or semi automatic weapon, a rifle ramrod, 32 Russian and German cartridges, 30 cartridge cases and 9 bullets. A dog ID tag with the date 1917 is connected with the events of the First World War and a cartridge case with the date 1932 with the legacy of interwar hunters. In addition to these finds, six mid 18th, second half of the 19th mid 20th century coins and various 20th century artefacts were found. [From the publication]
