Alternative Title:
Stranger worlds in translation - Syrokomla's as a translator
Summary / Abstract:

ENThis article attempts to characterize a wide array of Syrokomla’s translation competencies, and to discuss the specificity of selected translations from English, German, French and Russian in order to define his profile as a translator. Syrokomla’s translation practices and works show his non-standard translation choices and determine both the recurrent dominants of versification and rhytmization, and the poetics/ genre-dependent differences in lexical and stylistic choices. Moreover, some translation transfers were scrutinized to show only possible potential of indirect translation (e.g. translations from Danish through German – as in Andersen’s works, or the French and English translations) whose equivalents could be known to Syrokomla only via Russian translations, which was a very frequent practice in the 19th century. Key words: translation, translation practice, indirect translation, genre, 19th century, world literature, Latin language, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, ballad, tale, dumka, song, carol, locality.
