ENThe article presents in extenso two memoranda concerning the future of the University reborn in Vilnius in 1919, in the context of diplomatic efforts to normalise mutual Lithuanian-Polish relations after the two nations regained the right to self-determination in 1918. The belonging of Vilnius and the Vilnius region to the Polish state – leaving aside the question of whether or not it would be federated with Lithuania – and the functioning of the Stefan Batory University were of keen interest to the University’s teaching staff and its students. At a meeting of the Academic Senate on 30 May 1921, Rector Michał Siedlecki "reported on a political meeting with General Żeligowski". Its topic was the matter of Paul Hymans’s project. After hearing the rector’s report, it was decided to elect a committee to draft the University’s position that would be sent to the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment in Warsaw. At a meeting of the Academic Senate on 4 July 1921, Siedlecki presented a communiqué on the position of the University concerning the political situation. "The Senate decided to implement steps among the Polish people and foreign scholars to raise awareness as to the nature and importance of Vilnius University".
