Summary / Abstract:

ENThe Stephen Bathory University (USB) in Vilnius functioned in years 1919–1939. It was the smallest state university in pre-war Poland. According to offi cial statistics from 1919 of inhabitants of the territory of Vilnius District comprised 53,6 % of Poles, 21,4 % of Belarusians, 8,1 % of Jews, 6,9 % of Lithuanians, 2,3 % of so called «locals» and 7,7 % of other nationalities. Nevertheless at that time there were no more than 3 % of Belarusian students at the University. In 1919 there were only 5 persons of Belarusian nationality and in 1936 their number rose to 99. Although they were a small group, Belarusian students conducted intense self-help and political activity. Contrary to other minorities, they published numerous and various articles/press, where they referred to the current political and social issues discussed not only in academic environment. In this article, which is only a reconnaissance research, the author presents statistics data referring to their presence at the University. Lists of Belarusian student organizations have been mentioned along with Belarusian press and its political directions.
