ENThe article is devoted to attempted changes in the management of the estates belonging to the Radziwiłł of the Biržai Line undertaken between the late sixteenth and late seventeenth century to depart from the ‘itinerant court’ system to centralise the latifundium administration. The article aims to explain the reasons behind difficulties with the introduction of a systemic change in the management of the latifundium belonging to the Evangelical line of Radziwiłłs, undertaken by Lithuanian Hetman and Voivode of Vilnius Krzysztof II (1585–1640), Equerry of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Bogusław (1620–1669), and his daughter Princess Ludwika Karolina (1667– 1695), Countess Palatine of Neuburg (1687–1695). The study shows the actual scope of changes in the organisation of communication, the chancellery, treasury, and legal service of the estate management. It also discusses the recruitment criteria, hierarchy, authority, and scope of independence of officials at the highest and middle levels of administration. The author’s primary purpose is to negate the perception of modernisation of estate management as an effect of linear progress and demonstrate that it was necessary to maintain the tradition of owners’ personal supervision through estate tours throughout the whole discussed period. Keywords: Radziwiłłs of Biržai line, latifundium, management, officials, reform plans, implementation. [From the publication]
