Image of person as a member of society in Lithuanian dialectal proverbs
Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article deals with the image of person as a member of society in the proverbs of Lithuanian dialects. In accordance with the methodology of the Lublin Ethnolinguistic School, the goal is to investigate the image of person as a member of a community, their attitudes, relationship with other members of the same community. An attempt is made to answer the question what is a person to other people, as represented in dialectal proverbs. What characteristics of a person are revealed? One of the most important criteria for selecting paremias for this study is that the proverb chosen should include the word denoting a human being. Empirical data for analysis were mainly collected from the paremias recorded in Lithuanian dialect dictionaries and the Dictionary of Lithuanian. In these sources, the dialectal material was recorded in the 20th and early 21st century. The worldview contained in the paremias is colloquial, reflecting villagers’ attitudes to the world order and the rules of conduct relating to their everyday lives. They contain comparisons to animals, plants, household items, work, etc. Paremias about people (as members of a community) highlight human traits, which fall into two categories: social and psychosocial. Keywords: proverbs; Lithuanian dialects; social and psychosocial characteristics. [From the publication]
