Summary / Abstract:

ENThe exhibition held at the National Gallery of Art in 2021–2022, Jonas Mekas and the New York Avant-garde, presented the broad spectrum of Jonas Mekas‘ (1922–2019) activities: not just his films but also his intellectual and organisational work in establishing and leading a number of institutions and in fostering a new approach towards film as an art genre. Attention was primarily turned towards the first three decades of Mekas‘ activities in New York – from 1949 when he and his brother Adolfas Mekas arrived there from a war refugee camp, until he became one of the main figures in American avant-garde film culture who created, promoted, distributed and preserved independent film. Mekas‘ main films could be seen at the exhibition, along with selected film reviews, photographs, publications, documents, posters, brochures, letters and other archive material from Mekas‘ personal archive, part of the Jonas Mekas Estate. In addition to Mekas‘ own film, the exhibition also featured films by his colleagues whose work he appreciated and with whom he shared a similar aesthetic sensibility. The exhibition was accompanied by the release of a book-catalogue, an international symposium and a cycle of film screenings and discussions. [From the publication]
