ENAt the end of World War II, the majority of Lithuania’s population ended up under the authority of the totalitarian Soviet Union, whereas more than 60 thousand sought to protect themselves from Soviet persecution and the approaching front by fleeing to Germany. Eighty-five percent of the Lithuanian war refugees were Catholics. Around 25 percent of all the priests and three representatives of the Catholic hierarchy fled from Lithuania. Unlike the clergymen in the first wave of Lithuanian migrants to the West, these stood out for their intellectual profile: many had a higher education and were very involved in cultural activities, adding academic work to their regular service in the Church. Fleeing to democratic countries in the West forced them to adapt to the new circumstances of the era. This article presents a social portrait of the Lithuanian Roman Catholic clergy who left Lithuania in 1944-1951, highlighting the pastoral challenges they faced that echoed the demands of the time, their chosen directions of migration and reintegration in the West. Based on prosopographic data and a context analysis, this study presents the issues that postwar clergymen had to face. Keywords: World War II, migration, diaspora, the Lithuanian Roman Catholic Church, clergymen. [From the publication p. 487]
