ENThe question of the political unity of the patriotic movements of Lithuanian Americans (Catholics, nationalists, leaguists, socialists) is one of the most important problems in the history of the diaspora. During World War II and the occupation of Lithuania, LithuanianAmerican political activity was fractured, with the Lithuanian American Council and Lithuanian American Nationalist Organisations carrying out the same work of liberating Lithuania (League for the Liberation of Lithuania, Lithuanian-American mission). Until now, this issue has not been explored in Lithuanian historiography. The documents found provide a more detailed insight into the problem. On November 7, 1947, at a meeting of the leaders of the LAC and the nationalists in New York, an agreement was reached – the return of the Lithuanian-American nationalists to the LAC as a fourth ideological group was accepted. The meeting was successful because the nationalists no longer imposed preconditions for joining on equal terms, and the main documents of LAC operation were approved. However, a certain distrust of the nationalists by LAC leaders P. Grigaitis and M. Vaidyla was observed. LAC president L. Šimutis, the chairman of the meeting, diplomatically settled the difficulties. During the meeting, views on the number of members of each group were exchanged in the Council. Nationalists (A. Olis, P. J. Žiūris, V. Abraitis and others) only requested to increase the number of representatives of each group to nine. The enlargement of the LAC Executive Committee and the division of members’ responsibilities were also discussed. This was left to decide to a specifically appointed commission. The nationalists made concessions because their own activity was declining at that time. The nationalists were influenced by the mediation of the representative of the VLIK, Dr Pranas Padalskis. Moreover, it became clear that the process of Lithuania’s liberation would last for a long time. Keywords: Lithuanian American Council, League for the Liberation of Lithuania, nationalists, united activity. [From the publication]
