ENThe article, drawing on the primary sources, scientific and popular science publications, presents and examines the life path of an extraordinary personality – Aloyzas Valušis – a scout, an officer of the army of the Republic of Lithuania, a cavalryman, a colonel of the General Staff, and a personal adjutant of the President Antanas Smetona. Valušis was a long-time commander of the 1st hussar regiment of the Grand Duke Lithuanian Hetman Jonušas Radvila, a military attaché of the Republic of Lithuania to Poland since 1927, and son-in-law of President Smetona. The aim of the study is to overview the life of Valušis, as well as the reasons and circumstances that shaped him as a high-ranking officer and Lithuania’s representative in the diplomatic service in the position of military attaché. The article discusses the family of Valušis, his youth, scouting activities, service in the Lithuanian army, diplomatic service, public activities, and his fate as an emigrant. The research reveals a multi-coloured portrait of this personality. The family environment of his youth and the experiences of the first years of his life shaped the young man’s love for the reborn state of Lithuania and dedication to work for its freedom. This led him to the Lithuanian Scouts organisation, and later to the army, where he climbed the career ladder step by step for two decades. It has to be noted that Valušis was not a born leader and usually remained in the shadow of his comrades or higher superiors, as evidenced by his positions as adjutant or deputy commander.Valušis was regarded as a reliable man of exemplary behaviour, high morals, very honest, and virtuous. He performed his assigned duties well, was responsible, hardworking, interested in professional innovations, was proactive, and generated ideas, although not all of them were implemented. At the same time, he was an active participant in public life, especially distinguished himself in the activities of Lithuanian scouts. While living in emigration, Valušis remained on the fringes of active social and political life. Considering the revealed facts of Valušis’s life, for a more detailed biographical and in-depth research of this personality, an analysis and evaluation of the documents scattered among the various collections of the Lithuanian Central State Archives and Central Military Archives in Warsaw is necessary. Keywords: General Staff Colonel Aloyzas Valušis, 1st Hussar Regiment, Lithuanian army, military attaché, scouts. [From the publication]
