ENSince 2015, the Institute of National Remembrance, Eastern Borderlands Department of the Office of Search and Identification in the Vilnius Region conducted a search for Armia Krajowa soldiers, who died during the Second World War in fighting with German or NKVD units, in order to exhume their remains. In 2019, operations were conducted at 5 locations. In Guriai area (Juodojo kelio St. 71, Vilnius) a 3x3 m test pit was excavated in the search for two AK soldiers who died on 6/7 July 1944 in the Aušros Vartai operation, but the burial site was not found. In Migūnai (Vilnius District), the remains of Lieutenant Apolonij Duszkiewicz were exhumed in the inactive parish cemetery and reburied in the active Migūnai village cemetery. In the Pajusinė village Forest (Vilnius District), 4 test pits (a total of 21 m2) were excavated at the corners of a site indicated in the forest where the mounds of 42 graves are visible. Grave pits were identified in all of the test pits, but only one was excavated: burial 2 in test pit 3. A mass grave site with signs of later digging (probably for looting) was identified in it. Two rows of individuals and about 16 skulls were recorded. It was determined that the burials contained the remains First World War soldiers of the tsarist Russian army. In the Riaubiškės village Forest (Švenčionys District), the search, begun in 2018, for the remains of fallen soldiers continued in the forest. Boreholes drilled at intervals of 1 m were used to check two 10x10 m areas. 180 boreholes were drilled to a depth of 1 m. Natural soil was recorded and no burials were found. In the Church of St. Raphael the Archangel parish cemetery on Juozapavičiaus Street in Vilnius, a search was conducted for the remains of 3 AK soldiers. One 5x5 m trench with extensions (a total of 38 m2) and another two trenches (a total of 10 m2) were excavated on the SE edge of the cemetery.17 burials (two of children) were discovered. 15 of them were of poor 19th-century Vilnius residents buried in the parish cemetery. Burial 10 may be connected with the sought individuals. A fragment of an unknown iron object and a glass ampoule containing a powder of unclear origin was found in the chest area of the individual in burial 12. It is possible to conjecture that the ampoule could be some electronic(?) part used for radio communications. [From the publication]
