Summary / Abstract:

[...]. [Iš teksto, p. 640]

ENThe search for the AK soldiers who fought against the Germans or the NKVD troops continues in the Vilnija region for the fourth consecutive year. The potential locations of burial sites in Raubiškiai forest (Švenčionys district) were probed in 10 x 10 m squares, with core samples taken in 1 m increments. One square containing mixed soil was identified, and a subsequent test pit revealed a grave measuring 4 x 3 m, orientated in the N–S direction at a 20–200° angle. Rough wooden circular cross-cut planks with bark still attached on one side were uncovered at a depth of 1.3 m. The wooden structure/top of the coffin measured 2.3 x 1.85 m in size. The remains of 6 individuals were uncovered beneath the planks. No distinctive finds were present, other than fragments of clothing and footwear. The four-year search for the soldiers of the Fakira squad is over. The works at the cemetery of the Vilnius Parish of St. Raphael the Archangel are ongoing. An additional area of 50 m2 has been excavated. Twenty-one burials dating to the 18th–20th century have been uncovered at a depth of 1.2–1.4 m. The bodies of the deceased were oriented in the E–W direction, with heads facing E. At least some were buried in coffins, and no burial goods were found. Massive amounts of disturbed remains were discovered (24 individuals). This year’s works have been defined by the excavation of the most disturbed portion of the cemetery. Eight pits have been recorded, some of which contained rubble. The burials which were sought were likely destroyed when a portion of the cemetery in the E was excavated for the construction of the garages. [From the publication]
