ENIn the context of the overall situation of construction of district (powiat) archives of Grand Duchy of Lithuania the history of building of Upyte powiat courts archive at the beginning of the 17th century in the Naujasis Panevėžys in Upytė Eldership is analyzed. Legal regulations for the construction of archives have appeared in the second half of 16th century in the Lithuanian Statutes and the Constitutions of the Sejm. Organization of powiat courts archives was a joint effort of the authorities, officials of district and especially the powiat nobility, which was supposed to finance their construction. Other walks of society had to contribute too. Such archive building in Naujasis Panevėžys was built in the second decade of the 17th century (с. 1614) with the assistance of the Upyte powiat nobility, Upyte starosta Yarosh Volovich, and involving Panevėžys starosta Peter Kroshinski. To this day, fortunately remained building and a memorial plaque with the inscription in Latin are unique artefacts of law’s archaeology of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Unveiling of the memorial plaque at the beginning of the 17th century in Grand Duchy of Lithuania can also be considered as exclusive fact, an unknown fact to the international historiography. It was found that on the damaged plaque remained the fragment of a complex family coat of arm of Y. Volovich “Bogoria”. The article concludes that the inscription one-sidedly emphasizes only the merits of its Fundator Y. Volovich in the financing and construction of the building and avoids mentioning contribution of Upytė gentry. The Latin text of the inscription and its translation into Lithuanian and Russian languages are provided. [From the publication]
