ENSimonas Daukantas (1793-1864), a Lithuanian historian, man of letters, linguist, and folklorist, lived in Papilė, in the home of the administrator of the St Juozapas church, Ignotas Vaišvila. It is known that Daukantas loved to do woodwork. When Vaišvila was moved to Joniškis parish in 1866, he brought to his home in Žagarė a bench, supposedly made by Daukantas himself, on which the historian sat and slept. Later the bench stayed with his hostess Marijona Antanavičiūtė. The family of Daugmondžius-Stankūnas-Antanavičius preserved this piece of furniture, and its last owner, teacher, historian Romualda Vaitkienė gave it to the Papilė Simonas Daukantas Memorial Museum this year. The article presents a short biography of the priests I. Vaišvila, Aleksandras Burba, the painter and photographer Aleksandras Ratkus who lived in the second half of the 19th century, as well as new data on the life of Daukantas in north-eastern Lithuania.
