ENThe publication presents the first publication of the map of the border between the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania drawn in c. 1585 and kept at the National Archive of Sweden. It is kept within the fund called Kartor och ritningar utan känd proveniens (Maps and drawings of an unidentified origin). The map was drawn by land surveyor Fleniog Oglen. The date has been identified based on the mentioning of Jan Kiszka (1547–1592), deputy cup-bearer of the court of the Grand Duke of Lithuania and elder of Samogitia in the description of the map, as well as the border agreement of 1584 and the inventory of Beržtalis/Bērstele Manor and its folwarks in the Upytė Powiat of 26 September 1585. The map reflects the border shift after the Livonian War (1558–1583) during the reign of Stephen Báthory (1533–1586/1576–1586). It depicts the 48.23 km long section between the Nogailene (Aužeļi) hillfort and the Butkūnai/Butkūni village of the Sesava Manor showing the territories taken from the Duchy of Courland and annexed to Lithuania. The landmarks include 7 rivers, 2 hillforts, 7 manors, 4 estates without main manor houses, 2 individual homesteads, 1 castle (Bauska) and town (Žeimelis), and 304 border marks (installed approximately at a distance of c. 159 m from each other. It also facilitates the localisation of some individual objects. One of these is the 16th century Beržtalis/Bērstele Manor of the von Grotthuss family that has been localised at the fortified manor site of Glebava (the modern Geručiai Village, Pakruojis District Municipality, Lithuania) based on the map. The manor acquired its new name from its new owner Jan Janowicz Hlebowicz (1544–1590). [From the publication]
