A "Foreign" elite? The territorial origins of the canons and prelates of the Cathedral Chapter of Vilna in the second half of the sixteenth century

Summary / Abstract:

ENWhile some of the later sixteenth-century cathedral clergy of Vilna displayed undoubted intellectual prowess, as a group they present a varied level of talents, zeal and piety. Even if we count all of them among the intellectual elite of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish Crown or even Christian Europe, they were certainly a very diverse group, not least in their territorial origins. Of the 75 canons and prelates who passed through the chapter of Vilna in the period 1551–1600, seventeen came from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and a further six came from Podlasie, which was part of the Grand Duchy until 1569. Just over half — forty-one — came from one or other lands of the Polish Crown. A single clergyman came from Royal Prussia. Nine persons came from places beyond the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish Crown. [JSTOR]
