ENA critical evaluation of national heroes in 21st-century Baltic theatre Until the end of the 20th century, the most popular narratives presented in Baltic theatres were national epics and other heroic stories, which engendered a spirit of national unity and pride. After the restoration of their independence, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania saw changes not only to these narratives, but also to the treatment of heroes, who until then had been universally popular and unequivocally valued.
