Summary / Abstract:

ENLocal ceramics artisans and artists in Europe and the Middle East were influenced by Chinese ceramics and Chinese porcelain techniques by adopting the use of shapes, decor and colour schemes of pottery. Ceramics produced in different cultures at different times reflected the desire to make white pottery in imitation of Chinese porcelain. The analysis of chromatics and ornamentation is gaining importance in the search for connections with stove tile making. The impact of Chinese ceramics has been overlooked in studies by stove tile researchers. The stove tile is an inextricable part of the general history of ceramics. The article provides an analysis of Chinese ceramics, its manufacture techniques, and its influence on the production of European ceramics. The imitation of Chinese ceramics is highlighted, which had a bearing on the development of many applied and decorative arts, including stove tiles. A glimpse from the perspective of a ceramicist calls for an extension of the scope of studies of stove tiles and possible contexts for interpretation. Looking at 16th and 17th-century Vilnius stove tiles from the broader perspective of the development of global ceramics, the salient features of Chinese ceramics imitation techniques are clear: opaque white-glazed tiles, lustre painting, the use of frit, and the production of Chinese blue and white style stove tiles. A certain intercultural dialogue made its way indirectly through intermediate routes via the assimilation of technologies and the routine availability of such pottery for domestic use; via the imitation of blue and white pottery by adapting it and transmitting images from pottery on to stove tiles.
