Short notes on antiquaries from Klaipėda
Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article presents a list of people from the town and district of Memel-Klaipeda who were involved in societies of sciences and antiquities in East Prussia. This short publication is devoted to one field of the academic interests of G. Zabiela, namely the history of archaeology. These notes are collected from issues of Physikalische-Okonomische Gesellschaft and Altertumsgesellschaft Prussia in Kdnigsberg. Very brief information is provided by lists of members of these societies. Some of them give only the names of people and their occupation or profession. It is unclear whether or not these members were active in Altertumsgesellschaft Prussia, but membership itself was a sort of declaration of interest in local history and antiquities. Lists of gifts of artefacts for the Provinzial-Muse- um and the Prussia-Museum, which were compiled by the above-mentioned societies, provide more information about people who were interested in collecting archaeological artefacts from their homeland. Thanks to these short pieces of information, it is possible to recognise areas and sites that were of interest to amateur collectors. The sites were usually on estates that their owners were interested in, or were managed by foresters or dune wardens, as in the case of the Curonian Spit. This article focuses on information available about personalities, rather than archaeological finds. It is an attempt to reconstruct the section of Klaipeda society at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries that was interested in the prehistory and history of the northern part of East Prussia. It appears that the people who were interested were usually successful in their professional lives, which covered a wide range of occupations: estate owners, physicians, lawyers, musicians, timber merchants, dune wardens, merchants, mayors, district governors, bankers, grammar-school headmasters, orphanage wardens, and even army officers. It seems that this diverse group of professionals illustrated the principle that educated people should be interested in the past of their town and their native land. Keywords: Memel-Klaipėda, East Prussian archaeology, societies of sciences and antiquities. [From the publication]
