ENThe diplomatic mission of Marcjan Dominik Wołłowicz showed that in the first years after the Battle of Poltava, the Polish-Lithuanian ruling elite hoped to maintain equitable relations with Russia. The main goal of the mission was to force the Tsar to surrender Livonia and right-bank Ukraine. Wołłowicz was also to demand evacuation of Russian troops, cessation of contributions and compensation for the crimes and looting committed by the Russian army. The mission faced many practical problems like the lack of money or support from the king and ministers of Poland and Lithuania. Despite all efforts, Wołłowicz was able to partially solve only one problem: the return of the cannons and prisoners of war. The Russians promised to investigate the crimes of their soldiers, the Russian army was also to leave the Commonwealth, and Livonia was to be incorporated into the Commonwealth after the war. However, the Tsar made these promises knowing that the strength of his country would allow him not to honour them.
