Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article presents a calculation of expenses incurred by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland for the Livonian War of 1557–1570. The military revolution and the necessity to conduct warfare with the help of mercenary troops made the costs record-high – Lithuania had to pay over 4.1 million zlotys, and Poland over 3.4 million zlotys. To raise such an amount of money, fundamental treasury reforms were carried out, such as the reconstruction and increase of revenues from the ducal and royal domains of the Jagiellons, mainly in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and tax changes, mainly in the Kingdom of Poland. In addition, King Sigismund Augustus was forced to take out several loans against the pledge of monarch’s landed estates. The fi nancial effort borne by the Polish and Lithuanian sides was so great that, in the authors’ opinion, it was the main reason for unifi cation measures, which culminated in the Union of Lublin in 1569. Keywords: military revolution, Northern War 1557–1570, fiscal reforms. [From the publication]
